Look beyond a card’s headline

Credit card features are easier to compare when you put the terms side by side. Start with costs and repayment, then consider features that fit your needs.

This is general education. We may earn a commission from partner links. Read our disclosure.

Start with the details

  1. Read the pricing disclosure and identify purchase, transfer, and cash-advance terms.

  2. Note annual fees, other charges, and the length and conditions of any introductory period.

  3. Consider how you expect to repay the balance, and check the provider’s current terms before applying.

Questions worth asking

  • What applies after an introductory offer ends?
  • Which transactions are treated differently?
  • What conditions affect rewards, fees, or benefits?

A detail to keep in mind

Eligibility and approval come from the issuer. A card being mentioned on a website does not mean that everyone will qualify, and offers may change.
